Fugitive dust from unpaved roads creates human health hazards, degrades road surfaces, and increases the cost of road maintenance. As a result, many different chemical treatments are applied to unpaved roads in an attempt to control dust and stabilize the wearing course.   “Unpaved Road Management: A Successful Practitioner’s Handbook,” just out from the Federal Highway Administration, is based on a tour that visited dust control issue sites. Another recommended report is “Unpaved Road Chemical Treatments: State of the Practice Survey,” a nationwide survey which accompanied the book by the FHWA.

Global Road Technology has advanced products with proven effectiveness, which can provide both road dust control and/or stabilization. GRT utilises a number of safe, environmentally friendly chemistries that act by binding soil particles together, or making them too heavy to become airborne dust.   One form of dust control that will always fail to achieve sufficient results is watering, the simple method of spraying down unpaved roads with water trucks to keep dust from escaping the surface. It’s easy to see why this method would be appealing: it’s incredibly easy, affordable, and it usually appears as if dust has been altogether.

A gravel road is a type of unpaved road surfaced with gravel that has been brought to the site from a quarry or stream are common in less-developed nations, and also in the rural areas of developed nations such as Canada and the United New Zealand, and other Commonwealth countries, they may be known as metal roads. They may be referred to as "dirt roads" in common .

The basic objective of this project was to determine the cost- effectiveness of dust controls used on unpaved mine haul roads. Field testing was conducted at three surface coal mines (two in Wyoming, one in southern Illinois) for a total of 20 weeks. Cost effectiveness of dust controls used on unpaved haul roads.

The basic objective of this project was to determine the cost-effectiveness of dust controls used on unpaved haul roads.

The major technical questions are: 1. What control methods (different chemicals and water) are suitable for dust control of unpaved mine roads. broadly about the process of unpaved road management rather than just focusing on a specific type of chemical treatment.

Key Words FUGITIVE ROAD DUST, DUST CONTROL, CHEMICAL TREATMENT(S), UNPAVED, GRAVEL, UNSEALED ROADS, PALLIATIVES, STABILIZATION, UNPAVED ROAD MANAGEMENT Distribution Statement No restriction.

This document is. Haul road dust control. and ft away from the unpaved haulage road. Airborne dust measured along the unpaved haul road showed that high concentrations of fugitive dust can be generated with. Dust Control and Stabilization Section IV: Dust Control and Stabilization/Types of Stabilizers 51 All gravel roads will give off dust under all, they are unpaved roads that typically serve a low volume of traffic, and dust is usually an inherent problem.

The amount of dust that a gravel road produces varies greatly. Gravel Road Dust Control – Gravel roads are unpaved roads surfaced with gravel. They are common in less-developed countries, in the rural areas of developed countries, as haul roads, etc.

Due to dust generated, they are known as ‘dirt roads’ in some countries. The different ways to control dust on gravel roads are. Guidance on Estimating Road Dust Emissions from Industrial Unpaved Surfaces- To provide facilities guidance on how to report road dust emissions from unpaved surfaces to the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI).

An Unpaved Industrial Road Dust Calculator and Unpaved Road Dust Calculation Flowchart come with this guidance in order to perform and to explain the method of calculation. Paving is the most effective, and most expensive, method to control dust from unpaved roads.

Asphalt and Portland concrete provide durable and effective surfaces that prevent the breakdown of soil surfaces. Paving is very expensive. In the past few years, roads in Kotzebue carrying more than vehicles per day have been paved. Effectiveness Demonstration of Fugitive Dust Control Methods for Public Unpaved Roads and Unpaved Shoulders on Paved Roads Final Report DRI Document No.

The Dust Control on Unpaved Roads and Surfaces practice standard improves air quality by treating unpaved roads and surface areas with dust suppressants.

Unpaved roads and surfaces can be significant sources of particulate matter (PM10) and visible dust emissions from vehicle traffic or wind actions across the unpaved surfaces. Each of our dust suppressants addresses a particular need pertaining to road dust control.

Whether you need dust control for dirt race tracks, public roadways, gravel roads, unpaved roads or haul roads, we have the perfect product to meet your specific road dust abatement requirements. Road Dust Products.

We provide the following highly. Lignin Sulfonate and Calcium Chloride are two of the most popular unpaved road dust control products. These salts are mixed in a 35% solution and applied directly on the unpaved road.

They work by soaking up water from the air, thus keeping the top level of soil damp enough to prevent it from turning into dust. cost effectiveness, reduction in water use and ensuring that the is developed as a basis for the comparative assessment of dust control strategies.

Treat the area to achieve a minimum of 50% dust control at time of application of. Practices for Dust Control, for the purpose of studying the effectiveness of commonly used dust control strategies employed on aggregate surfaced roads.

In the year it was estimated that 53 percent of all roads in the United States were unpaved; totaling approximately million miles [1]. Dust control strategies are sometimes used to. Dust control measures apply to any construction site where there is the potential for air and water pollution from dust traveling across the landscape or through the air.

Dust control includes practices used to reduce or prevent the surface and air transport of dust during construction. Haul Road Dust. Rather than futilely attempting to maintain roads with just water, operators of sites can use Posi-Clear ® to give them the ability to focus more of their efforts on revenue generating activities.

Adding Posi-Clear ® to surfaces that constantly take the grinding traffic of heavy equipment can reduce the application frequency of standard watering programs by %. The result of over 20 years of persistent research and development, Soil Stabilization Innovations line of dust control products has settled industry benchmarks for durability, longevity, & eco-friendliness in the field of soil stabilization.

Made of acrylic polymers, our dust control products are used for soil stabilizing haul roads, mining sites, runways, dirt roads, gravel roads, etc. and. Considerations of Lowering Maintenance Standards of National Forest System Roads to Maintenance Level 2 The focus of this guide is on the safety aspects and considerations of lowering maintenance level (ML) 3, 4, or 5 National Forest System roads (NFS) to ML2.

Dust Palliative Selection and Application Guide The purpose of this publication is to help practitioners understand. Spatial and temporal variations of road dust PM 10 emission data in the Tahoe Basin have been examined and published in Zhu et al. (). Results of that study found that compared to the summer season, road dust emissions increased by an average factor of 5 in winter when traction control material was applied to the roads after snow events. The frequently used dust control methods include reduction of vehicular speed, application of water and the use of dust suppressing chemicals.

Although dust control has been in practice for decades now, quantitative studies on the effectiveness of the dust suppressing method of measuring dust from unpaved road surfaces.
